An effective hygiene approach for modern livestock operations

In modern livestock production, hygiene is essential for animal health, performance, and profitability. Across poultry, pig, and dairy systems, producers face ongoing challenges from moisture, ammonia, and pathogen pressure, which reduce welfare and efficiency through poorer growth, feed conversion, respiratory health, and increased disease risk.

At the same time, there is increasing pressure to improve biosecurity, reduce antibiotic use, and meet higher welfare and sustainability standards. Traditional hygiene methods, often based on periodic clean-outs and liquid disinfectants, are labour-intensive, disruptive, and short-lived, with protection quickly declining between applications.

A dry disinfection solution

Staldren is a dry disinfectant designed for use in animal production facilities and housing areas. It provides rapid antimicrobial action and ongoing protection against pathogens on surfaces and equipment.  It offers a practical solution for continuous in-place hygiene management, or as a complementary residual disinfection step within a broader hygiene program.

Staldren powder from CCD Animal Health

Staldren works through a combination of dry disinfection, moisture absorption, and ammonia binding. It reduces bacterial, viral, and fungal contamination while improving bedding conditions and air quality. Importantly, it can be applied directly into occupied sheds, eliminating downtime and making hygiene a seamless part of routine farm management.

Highly effective activity

The active ingredient of Staldren is Chloramine-T, a well-established chlorine-releasing compound used in veterinary and agricultural hygiene. When activated by moisture, it releases active chlorine that oxidises microbial cell walls, denatures proteins and enzymes, and disrupts DNA and RNA, preventing pathogen replication. This multi-target mode of action provides broad-spectrum efficacy against bacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella, Campylobacter (causes Spotty Liver Disease) and Pasteurella multocida (causes Fowl Cholera), viruses, and fungi, even in organic-rich environments like litter and manure.

Unlike many liquid disinfectants that act quickly and dissipate, Chloramine-T in Staldren® provides a controlled release of active chlorine. This results in extended antimicrobial activity, continuous reduction of pathogen load between applications and more stable hygiene conditions over time. This sustained action is particularly valuable in high-density livestock systems where infection pressure is constant.

Safe and practical to use

Staldren is designed for safe, practical use in occupied animal housing and is non-corrosive at recommended application rates, safe for animals when used correctly, gentle on infrastructure and equipment, and is simple to apply with no mixing or preparation required.  By combining dry disinfection, moisture control, and ammonia binding in a single application system, it helps producers maintain stable hygienic conditions without disrupting production.

Developed by Jorenku A/S in Denmark, Staldren is used in over 70 countries and has been used extensively in Australia for more than a decade.
